Composer & Lyricist Jason Robert Brown
Directed & Produced by CARL PUCL

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a powerful and intimate musical love story told from two distinct viewpoints: Cathy, a struggling actress, recalls their relationship backwards through time, while budding novelist Jamie tells the story of their love from their sunny first meeting.  Recounted almost entirely in song, THE LAST FIVE YEARS is both bittersweet and uplifting, with “irresistible music and lyrics that break your heart while they satisfy your mind and move your body in its seat.” (David Finkle, TheaterMania). Daemon Theatre’s exciting new production plays March 19 – 21 at the SMCS Centre for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now via www.lastfiveyears.ca .

Carl Pucl’s reimagined production of THE LAST FIVE YEARS features an updated design and musical approach drawn from the piece’s unique structural conceit. Building on the notion of differing perspectives, the production concept is inspired by mirrors and the idea that broken glass forever retains a memory of the reflection it once held.  The music, which underscores the emotional journey of the characters, is being re-examined with a fresh approach to complement the theme of fragmented memories.

Pucl was drawn to this script as his company’s first production because its key themes of risk, courage, love, and differing realities resonate deeply with his experience of being a young artist/impresario breaking into the business. Pucl’s determination to carve out his place in the pantheon of Toronto theatre right out of the gate may not seem like an uncommon dream, but the scale of his vision coupled with the pragmatism of his approach and his willingness to go all out in support of this project make him one to watch. “I wanted to give all of us a creative platform which might not always be available in the early stages of our careers,” says Pucl. “Many of us wait for someone to give us a chance and rather than waiting around, we are taking charge and inviting them to come see our show.”
